Pianist Garrick Ohlsson's "strength, sensitivity, and stylistic insight" ("San Francisco Chronicle") is on full display as he performs Beethoven's "Emperor" Concerto (Piano Concerto No. 5), led by San Francisco Symphony Conductor Laureate Herbert Blomstedt. This is music so powerful and triumphant, to hear it performed is akin to witnessing the instruments at play being used to the absolute peak of their potential. There's a reason, after all, that phrases from this work have been used in films as inspiring as "The King's Speech" and "Dead Poets Society" -- this is music that makes you want to stand up on your desk and start cheering. Also on the evening's stirring program at Davies Symphony Hall, a masterpiece of Scandinavian music: Stenhammar's Symphony No. 2.
