Maestro Michael Tilson Thomas, the San Francisco Symphony and the San Francisco Chorus jazz things up this Veterans Day weekend with a salute to "American Masters". It would hardly be complete, of course, without Gershwin's much beloved, melodically evocative "An American in Paris", one of the rare orchestral compositions ever to be turned into an Oscar-winning movie musical. Then there's MTT favorite Charles Ives, who balanced his composing career with owning an insurance agency, and whose pastoral-sounding Symphony No 3, "The Camp Meeting," was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. This series of concerts at Davies Symphony Hall actually opens with Ives' own favorite, "Psalm 90", followed by "The American Flag", written by Czech composer Antonin Dvorak, who immigrated to the U.S. in 1892.
