EILEN JEWELL - Down Hearted Blues

After releasing five albums of critically acclaimed original songs, the reigning queen of the minor key is taking a moment to shake hands with the blues. Eilen Jewell's new collection of twelve rare and bold blues and R&B covers adds to her potent mix of classic country, folk, and early rock 'n roll inspired original music. From the barrelhouse power of 1920's Bessie Smith to the electrified sounds of 1960's Betty James, blues music has always been a strong influence on the Boise, Idaho native.

On Down Hearted Blues (September, 2017 Signature Sounds Recordings) Eilen and her long-time road band (Jerry Miller, Shawn Supra, Jason Beek) rip through greasy versions of dark blues like Charles Sheffield's It's Your Voodoo Working, Willie Dixon's You Know My Love, and Albert Washington's One of These Days. The band also strips down the sound, trading in drums and electric instruments for washboards, mandolins, and banjos to cover songs like Memphis Minnie's Nothing in Rambling, Bessie Smith's Down Hearted Blues, and Moonshine Kate's Poor Girl's Story.

For over a decade Eilen Jewell has taken her brand of sultry surf-noir and dynamic Americana music to cities from Melbourne to Madrid to Manhattan. Her subtle but powerful musical approach, combined with her warm stage presence and evocative original lyrics, continue to gain her the loyalty of fans worldwide.

Support from Welsh country-blues trio THE GOAT ROPER RODEO BAND.

With just two old guitars, an upright Bass and a bucket full of rich, aching harmony, there's a hint of Hank a twist of Waylon, and a sprinkling of Gram, it's up and down soft and loud and swings like that big ol' country snake.... Their latest album 'Cosmic Country Blues' is out now on Aveline Records.

"Like the Everlys fronted by Gram Parsons" (Fatea)

"Amazing" (Bob Harris)

"The Goat Ropers are the real deal ! I was blown away when I first saw them play and heard them harmonise, I wanted desperately to join in. If there's any justice in this crazy world, they'll soon be a household name and we'll all be keeping it country with them" (Romeo Stodart- The Magic Numbers)

"The Goat Roper Rodeo Band take a slightly psychedelic route to the finish line and include some serious footstompin' rock 'n' roll along the way, Mix in a little gospel fire and a sprinkle of Gram and these boys ruled our last afternoon" (Spiral Earth)

"Wonderfully executed acoustic country blues with two guitars, a double bass and plaintive striking harmonies, a musical landscape driven by old timey sensibilities ...there's a lot to like about the Goat Roper Rodeo Band." (R2 Magazine)

"With refreshing, startling vocal harmonies and quirky song writing skills, these young'uns can roll out a fab sombre number just as well as an upbeat one, the Goat Roper Rodeo Band possess a uniqueness and quality that promises success and lovers of this old timey sound are simply going to love this." (Maverick magazine)

"A fresh, energetic three-piece acoustic band who combine great vocal harmonies with up-beat, self-penned songs to make a memorable live show." (The Record Journal Live)

"Man, how can some so young be so sad....and so perfect!" (Ian Dunlop - Gram Parsons / Flying Burrito Bros).

Great show for both Eilen's brand and Hillfolk Noir. Love her new albums sound and from the stories she told I wish I could go camping with she and her crew in Idaho. Also I would love to hear Eilen's version of the folk song "Wayfaring Stranger". Maybe next year when she returns to the Hamilton. Cheers its "Miller Time"
Seeing Eileen Jewell, Jerry Miller and the band left me “shaking all over”...in a real good way. The Idaho based band is a annual regular at the Narrows that I look forward to seeing each they are around. Seeing, listening and partaking their nicely blended Americana, Rockabilly, Texas Swing and Ballard’s leaves me feeling revitalized by their genuine sound. Also a big tip of the hat to opening duo of Lindsey Hunt and Steve Fulton who are the heir apparent to the Civil Wars. Man, swweeet harmonies accompanied by fiddle and acoustic guitar. Both of these acts are Idaho based, and a must see if you enjoy real musical talent and a genuineness in what they perform. Two very big thumbs, I will be looking out for of them again!

Eilen and the band never dissapoint. Nice to hear some exciting new material as well. Jerry is a treat to watch on his Gretsch, and Shawn puts on a show with his standup bass. Jason adds the perfect touch on the drums and the occasional backup vocal, as well as a mean wash board... bring your dirty laundry!
