The Frederick Douglass Memorial and Historical Association is pleased, once again, to present the Violins for Douglass Program for the enrichment and advancement of our community.  We are thrilled, once again, to offer SCHOLARSHIPS for two students to begin or continue their study of the violin, in honor of the legacy of Frederick Douglass. Two $1000 scholarships will be provided to two students, based on both need and merit.
In addition to being America's staunchest abolitionist, Douglass was also an accomplished violinist, and taught and encouraged all of his grandchildren to play.  His grandson, Joseph Douglass, became a celebrated professional concert violinist.
In recognition and celebration of Frederick Douglass’ commitment to the arts, as a symbol of our humanity and creativity, we are proud to invite students – young and old – to join us on Sunday, August 20, 2017, at 1:30pm at the African American Civil War Museum, 1925 Vermont Avenue, NW. The Memorial is most easily accessible by bus and Metro service to the African American Memorial/Street/Cardoza Metro station.
We will honor the rich legacy of Mr. Douglass by sharing his love of violin with students, both new and experienced. Any young person wishing to play can participate in the free workshop presented by Eboni Strings. Please arrive by 1:00pm.
Our celebration will include:

Performance and Workshop by Eboni Strings
"Petting Zoo" - in which Kevin Gillis, Prince Georges County Philharmonic Orchestra, exposes youth to instruments of all kinds
Competition for a music scholarship (Auditions to be held Sunday, July 30, 2017.  Get application and details here.)
Musical performance and concert – presented by new and prospective students, and youth registered for the Event

AUDITIONS ARE REQUIRED FOR SCHOLARSHIPS.  Information about the scholarships, and the requisite auditions, are available on the Frederick Douglass Memorial and Historical Association website and the Frederick Douglass Memorial and Historical Association Facebook Fan Page.  Click on the "Contact Us" button.
