Rotten Hill Gang Biography

You are entering the Dickensian hip-hop world of the Rotten Hill Gang, with tales of old and new London - stories as putrid as decaying vegetables at the end of a day in Portobello Road market and as uplifting and elevating as the sun rising over the Westway. It all began with Dirty White's project, the "Rotten Hill Sound System" which involved Dirty White on the decks and local street poet, Reds on the mic. After recruiting a few more members for a fuller sound, the group showcased their crazy beats at Ladbroke Grove’s Pelican Pub at a weekly night hosted by George Vjestica of Groove Armada. The band created an atmosphere like no other and caught the attention of Keyboard player/producer, André Shapps. Thus, the Rotten Hill Gang as we know today, was born! Fusing movie soundtracks such as Scarface and Once Upon A Time in America with classic rock 'n' roll guitar-riffs and gritty hip hop vocals complimented by the sultry tones of Hollie Cook of the Slits and Hayley Smith, the band sought to create a sound that was original, compelling, and definitely addictive. A sound that has caught the attention of Mick Jones, Charlene Spitteri and Huey Morgan to name but a few at recent shows across London. Very quickly, the Rotten Hill Gang has become one of London’s great live acts, comparable with soul outfits of the 1960s, or - more appositely - George Clinton's Funkadelic/Parliament. Their material deals with the dubside of life in Notting Hill, reality with rhythm and vaudeville humor with honesty. The band have played some impressive gigs, most notably Stephen Webster's 50th birthday, Wilton Hall supporting N.E.R.D for Levi's, the Notting Hill Carnival, performing to 10,000 people at "Love Music Hate Racism" at Stoke City's Britannia Stadium, Standon Calling and the Chelsea Arts Club Summer Ball. A turning point for the gang was the 2009 Glastonbury Festival, where the group played in Gaz Mayall's tent: outside the tarpaulin-covered area, many people strained to watch the set as an over packed tent jumped and swayed to the compelling music. 2011 saw the band take to the roads with great mates Big Audio Dynamite on their UK tour. RHG are set to play with them again late June. Their first single, BBQ is being released on June 20th as a precursor to their album released later this year. The single will be available online from the following sites: www.rottenhillgang.co.uk www.facebook.com/rottenhillgang www.myspace.com/officialrottenhillgang Rotten Hill Gang comprise of Gary Stonadge AKA Dirty White ex-bassist and songwriter of BAD II, André Shapps keyboard player/producer in BAD II, Reds a local rapper from the Portobello rd area . Angelic singers Annie Be a and Hollie Cook (daughter of Sex Pistol Paul Cook) and drummer Mallett of Transvision Vamp. Formed in a heartbeat, evolved over a lifetime, Rotten Hill Gang are a perfect example of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts!!!
