Green on Blue Biography

Green on Blue is a jazz quartet based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The group enjoys presenting audiences a new twist on the jazz standards that have formed the backbone of America’s music culture. The members of the quartet include Sarah Dowell on violin, Drew Mayhew on bass, Makenzie Mattis on drums, and Steve Rothstein on guitar. They perform a variety of jazz styles, including be-bop, traditional swing, blues, and latin.

The members met at Grand Valley State University and have been classically trained, earning college degrees in music, winning various competitions and a variety of scholarships, teaching students at academies and schools, and performing in local professional orchestras. Individually, they have played across the country and abroad. The group has performed with notable Michigan and Chicago jazz musicians, such as Tim Froncek, Michael Drost, and Jordan Finn. The quartet has also been featured with well-known New York Jazz musician Chris Norton at DeVos Place in Grand Rapids.

Green on Blue performs every second Thursday of the month at the Book Nook and Java Shop in Montague, Michigan. Individual members have performed at a multitude of West Michigan venues, such as the Frederik Meijer Gardens Amphitheater, Loutit Library Sunday Concert Series, The Grand Seafood and Oyster Bar in Grand Haven, Music at the Point in Spring Lake, the Box Factory in St. Joseph, Devos Place, and many other events. Green on Blue has made it their goal to familiarize the public with the jazz genre and support local businesses by bringing audiences a pleasant, engaging, and memorable musical experience.
