About this concert
Whether one leans towards the blues, opts for Americana or ignites some special fervour by playing with a garage band, there’s a common bond that suggests a reverence for the roots. Looking back towards an earlier template -- no matter what the genre -- proves the point that appreciating what came before can be a stepping stone for what comes next. Samantha Fish knows that all too well, and it’s been evidenced in the music she’s made her entire career. While she’s well known as a purveyor of blues, having been lauded by such legends as Buddy Guy, the Royal Southern Brotherhood and Luther Dickinson, her real love is simply raw, scrappy rock and roll. “I grew up on it,” she insists. “Working with Luther on my last album further instilled that spirit in me. It made me realize just how much that basic, unfettered sound means to me, and how well it ties into soul music, R&B, country and so many other forms of music that are essential even today. ”It’s little wonder that when it came time to record her new album, Chills & Fever (released March 17,2017), Fish set her sights on Detroit, the home of soul, Motown, legendary R&B as well as the much edgier rock-n- roll of Iggy Pop, Jack White, and The White Stripes. It was there that she joined forces with members of the Detroit Cobras, a band whose insurgent ethic has made them darlings of the Midwestpunk/blues scene. The two entities -- which included Joe Mazzola on guitar, Steve Nawara on bass, Kenny Tudrick on drums with Bob Mervak on keys, and the New Orleans horn section featuring Mark Levron and Travis Blotsky on trumpet and saxophone -- bonded over a common love of classic soul and rollicking rhythms, so much so that the results testify to a seemingly timeless template. Covering songs from the ‘60s and ‘70s -- indelible melodies from the pens of legends like Jackie DeShannon, Jerry Ragavoy, Bert Berns and Allen Toussaint -- along with producer Bobby Harlow (King Tuff, The Gap Dream, White Fang) a member of the Detroit band The Go, which also featured Jack White prior to his stint with the White Stripes. With that as her starting point, Fish and the band then created an album that’s best described as a pure slab of rocking rhythm n’ blues. “I listened to a lot of soul music, and I dug deep into people like Otis Redding and Ray Charles,” Fish recalls. “I was also influenced by people like North Mississippi Allstars, R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough. It’s a less restrained style of music than the sound people may be used to hearing from me, it’s definitely a different facet of my personality.”

Edinburgh Blues Club Biography

In late 2013 it became apparent there was popular support for the idea of a regular blues club in Edinburgh. The key driver was concern that Edinburgh and the surrounding area might start to miss out on touring blues acts. Following discussions and a successful open meeting with interested parties, the Edinburgh Blues Club has been established. Our primary goal is to provide regular live blues events in Edinburgh with touring blues acts from the UK and beyond; with support from the finest local blues artists. We intend to promote a blues event each month (except over the duration of the Edinburgh summer festivals).
In June 2014 Edinburgh Blues Club became a Community Interest Company (or Social Enterprise) limited by guarantee, Company no 479711. It is also the objectives of the club to carry on activities which benefit the community by providing regular concerts, workshops, master-classes and other events; to carry out market research to identify and facilitate the design and development of training/teaching capacity in order to encourage those members of the community who would not otherwise be exposed to or able to afford such training.
Our launch was a fund raiser at The Voodoo Rooms, Edinburgh on Friday 7th March 2014, featuring four superb blues acts from central Scotland: The Black Diamond Express, Jed Potts & The Hillman Hunters, Fraser John Lindsay’s Blues Incentive and Houndog Fraser & Rock Hunter. See the following page for more details. This was followed on Friday 18 April by a headline show by Eilidh McKellar, described by Joe Bonamassa as “one of the brightest players I have encountered in a long time”, with support by GT’s Boos Band and a May show by British Blues Awards nominees Brothers Groove.. Following this are shows by Hamilton Loomis and Ryan McGarvey in June. Later this year will see shows from Rosco Levee & The Southern Slide, Grainne Duffy, Simon McBride and Ian Siegal & Jimbo Mathus.
The Edinburgh Blues Club is to be run on a member subscription basis, where club members provide a monthly payment of £10 in return for access to the monthly events and newsletter. This will allow a steady income stream and give the members assurances that we will regularly be planning for future events. Membership is available via our website by standing order or regular paypal payment. General admission to each event is available. Sponsorship and donations to a regular monthly raffle are welcome as methods of additional funding.
It is our intention to work with the established blues clubs within Scotland and the north of England to mitigate travel costs. Likewise we wish to work with blues, roots and jazz festivals within the region to provide additional bookings for touring blues acts.
We all have a deep appreciation for blues music and intend for the genre to be covered in all its guises within the Edinburgh Blues Club. We believe that a range of different styles will appeal to a broad range of audience. Further bookings will be announced over the coming months.
