About this concert
May 9th Songwriter Series feat/Justin Nozuka- http://www.justinnozuka.com/ - The maturity of Justin Nozuka's music, a soulful blend of R&B and pensive singer/songwriter folk that recalls both Nick Drake and Lauryn Hill, belies his tender years: Nozuka was only 18 when his debut album was released. The son of a Japanese father and American mother (actress Holly Sedgwick, who coincidentally happens to be Kyra Sedgwick's sister), Nozuka was born in New York City in 1988, the sixth of seven children. Nozuka's older brothers were musicians -- George Nozuka, three years Justin's senior, released his debut dance-pop album, Believe, in 2006 -- and after the family moved from New York City to Toronto, Ontario after his parents' divorce, he began to explore music himself. Learning to play guitar from a classmate at boarding school, Nozuka began writing the songs that would make up his debut album when he was only 15. Playing gigs on Toronto's active folk and singer/songwriter circuit while still in high school, Nozuka attracted the attention of the British indie label Outcaste Records (Joss Stone, KT Tunstall), which signed the youngster for his 2006 debut album, Holly. You I Wind Land and Sea followed in 2010. Looking to further develop his sound, Nozuka built a home studio and took his time writing and self-producing his spare, elegant third album Ulysees, which was released in early 2014.Jory Nash- https://www.jorynash.com/ Jory Nash is an award-winning singer-songwriter and storyteller who blends elements of folk, jazz, blues, pop & soul into an original stew of sound. He has recorded 8 critically acclaimed albums. the most recent being his Spring 2015 release The Many Hats of Jory Nash. In 2013 his album Little Pilgrim was nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award (CFMA) for Best Producer. His 2009 album New Blue Day was named Penguin Eggs Magazine Critic’s Choice Album of the Year. Jory Nash also received a CFMA nomination for New Blue Day. He is also a previous winner of the OCFF Songs From The Heart Award for his song "When I Walk Out".Zachary Lucky- http://zacharylucky.com/ Zachary Lucky is unapologetically old-school country, armed with a husky, baritone voice - He carries himself like a younger Richard Buckner or a heartier Doug Paisley and receives comparisons to songwriters such as Gordan Lightfoot and Kris Kristofferson. He sings of Canadian places and people as knowingly as he might Townes Van Zandt or the Rio Grande. It's a relatable show on many levels, and conjures universal feelings that have passed through our collective timelines. Already hailed as a master storyteller by outlets ranging from No Depression to The Globe and Mail!, Lucky’s Everywhere A Man Can Be is his most powerful statement to date.  The Songwriter Series is a monthly singer/songwriter showcase presented on Tuesday nights at 8 pm, in the Temple Lounge at Donaleigh’s in downtown Barrie. Based on the Guitar Pull format the series features three guest artists every month.  These terrific artists represent a mix of various genres and each show is a unique night of great music! The Songwriter Series is co-hosted by music journalist/ promoter Chas. Hay and veteran singer/ songwriter Brett Caswell, who together curate the series. Each evening offers a unique opportunity to witness veteran and newer singer-songwriters interact in a ‘songwriter’s circle’ or ‘guitar pull’ where they often accompany one another as they take turns swapping songs, stories, and personal recollections.
