Gian-Carla Tisera Biography

Acclaimed by Latin Jazz Net as a "provocative and brilliant" artist, Gian-Carla makes stunningly bold crossings between Latin American folk, jazz, soul, pop, political song, classical and roots music. Of her performance at New York's Symphony Space, Classical Lite Magazine praised: "With her power, vocal clarity, and with a combination of glamour and grits she incorporates it all… she is a jewel of an artist." In August 2014 Gian-Carla released her debut album Nora la Bella, which was chosen Album of the Week by Latin Jazz Net and of which critics rave: "You've never heard anything like it, it's quite possibly a game-changer, you can only welcome it entirely and you can’t help but admire her bravado." - The Examiner As a Bolivian-American artist trained in the opera and theater world, Gian-Carla’s subversive musical prowess is the result of two worlds colliding to create a powerful, original and groundbreaking fusion of musical genres. She was raised in Cochabamba, Bolivia and later moved to the United States where she completed her Master’s Degree at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Since 2008 she lives in the city of New York where she found herself re-united with the folk music of her homeland and where she discovered the liberating force of jazz. She had toured with the Bolivian Baroque Project which showcased her voice on the world's greatest concert halls - including London's Wigmore Hall, Berlin's Konzerthaus, Vienna's Mozarteum, Istanbul's Hagia Sophia, Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, Switzerland's KKL, Singapore's Esplanade Concert Hall, and many others. But when she moved to New York she began to collaborate with visual artists and to submerge herself in the city’s famous Jam Sessions to explore improvisation and to expand her ideas on musical fusion. In this way she discovered her own musical and vocal artistry in the realms of jazz and world music. During her 2014 Nora la Bella CD release, AXS Entertainment lauded: “she’s doing things that defy logic, yet amplify the imagination.” Critical Jazz Magazine extolled: “The beauty and power of Gian-Carla’s sublime gift allows the listener the rare opportunity to simply become enveloped in a lyrical wonderland that few have the ability to communicate.” Gian-Carla has worked with some of the best talent in the industry, including Grammy-nominated musicians such as pianist Elio Villafranca, bassist Luques Curtis, drummer Yayo Serka, trumpeter Diego Urcola, five-time Grammy-winning bassist John Benitez, the legendary David Amram and many others. She has recently completed two Bolivian Tours and performed at some of the best venues in New York City including The Public Theater, Rockwood Music Hall, Symphony Space, Cornelia Street Club, The United Palace of Cultural Arts, and Americas Society - the prestigious concert hall dedicated to Latin American culture in New York. Her long list of classical concerts and collaborations includes the Los Angeles Philharmonic, The Pasadena Symphony, Florilegium Chamber Ensemble (UK), The Bolivian National Symphony and Di Capo Opera, Underworld Opera, Metropolis Opera, and New Jersey Opera Theater among others in New York. In 2014 Gian-Carla received the Medal of Honor to Merit from the Plurinational State of Bolivia because “as a woman and a worthy representative of Bolivia she shows inspiration and motivation for contemporary generations.” Singer | Producer of Tropical Music and Latin Fusion - Cantante | Productora de Música Latina y Tropical | www.soundsofquiroga.com | www.giancarlatisera.com
