Simon Eugene Music Biography

Simon is a prolific writer and one of the UK’s great secrets. Steeped in the tradition of the great songwriters of the past-Dylan, Lennon, Syd Barratt and an act with whom there are many parallels, Sugarman, Sixto Rodriqez (an artist with whom Simon has sometimes shared the same keyboard player).

A genuine troubadour who always walks his own path and never compromises in the quality of his writing, those that know him as Comfort, singer in the band Out of my Hair, his most well known project, would attest to that. Simon writes some of the most intelligent and penetrating lyrics around. Early classics like In the Groove Again, through to the deep felt folk soul music of Everyone Knows. Mystical, political, heartfelt. Lyrics that hit right in the gut.

Simon has had his very own Manga Cartoon strip in Japan (Comfort-the Spirit of Music). He’s played with the likes of Radiohead and David Bowie. His guitarist left to join Oasis, his bass player to Robbie Williams with whom he shared the same management. He’s recorded with the very best around. But has stayed forever in the shadows.

Through with the Out of my Hair and Comfort projects, Simon started the International Love Corporation, a call to arms, to the higher purpose! Their one album so far, the Experimental Shape of Happiness, is a gem, containing the afore mentioned Everyone Knows and the equally profound Shelter and Telepathy Planes, a paean to a fading relationship, broken down to the point of imaging the only place they might still be able to meet and connect is on the Astral Plane.

It is this slightly esoteric twist to Simon’s music that makes his flavour so distinct. For the last couple of years Simon has been following a woodland folk direction, inspired by the likes of Nick Drake, early Cat Stevens, Rodrigez and especially Astral weeks era Van Morrison, one his absolutely favourite albums. Two of his newest songs, Figures in the Fading Blue and The River Didn’t Flow, show an artist at the very heights of his songwriting abilities. A more measured, more mature approach than the wild psychedelia of his early years. But that is also still there, underneath it all, in tracks like Two Stones, evoking the spirit of true psych-folk.

Simon is now recording a new set of material for a hopefully soon forthcoming new album and bringing to life the ILC. And in between is touring through Europe solo, weaving textures with an acoustic guitar, a pedal. a small keyboard and a big bag of beautiful songs. Please come and discover him. Sit amidst the beauty of his creations. And prepare your heart to open that little bit more.
