Alex Mendham & His Orchestra Biography

About the Orchestra Formed under the youthful direction of Alex Mendham, this 11-piece Orchestra authentically performs hot jazz and sweet dance band music from the Art Deco era but with a modern energy and passion that comes from younger musicians. The passion the Orchestra has for this golden age of music is what keeps them together. No corner is cut when it comes to preserving the sound or the clean cut image of vintage Hollywood: from their original instruments to the pomade that slicks their hair, no detail is overlooked. Add to that their stunning close-harmony sisters and crooning vocalists and you have a unique combination that is wowing concert and festival goers at home and across Europe. The Orchestra has steadily earned itself the reputation of being the “go-to” group for television and film alike. Band members have appeared in ITV’s ‘Downton Abbey’ and ‘Mr. Selfridge’, whilst Director Joss Whedon cherry picked the Orchestra to feature in the sequel to the third highest grossing film of all time; Avengers: Age of Ultron. High end restaurants and clubs have also seized on the Orchestra as a way of enhancing already sumptuous launch nights. Charlie Gilkes and Duncan Stirling, self-styled “alternative nightlife vendors” chose Mendham and the Orchestra when it came to open Mayfair’s “Mr. Foggs”, wowing such luminaries as Kelly Brook and Sienna Miller. One of many examples of the Orchestra being called upon to add their Great British flavour was to the ‘Flannels for Heroes’ garden party hosted by Austin and Howard Mutti-Mewse at Kensington Palace. From its formation, the Orchestra has always maintained an active working schedule across London: from entertaining patrons of The Dover Street Arts Club to audiences at the Royal Festival Hall, from London's St Pancras Station to the world famous Tower Ballroom in Blackpool; all coupled with regular live broadcasts on BBC Radio with hosts Jo Good and on the Simon Lederman show. Following a highly successful New Year’s Eve Ball engagement at the Savoy Hotel, they now hold a coveted residency at this prestigious West End venue. With it, they are following in the footsteps of such hallowed 1920s and 30s dance band names as Carroll Gibbons and his Savoy Hotel Orpheans and the Savoy Havana Band. Aside from their cinematic exploits and festival appearances, Alex Mendham & His Orchestra are proven to be the first choice in both the UK and throughout Europe for adding style and sophistication to corporate events, weddings and product launches. Their unique services and charm have been on hand in the world’s most luxurious hotels, casinos, charity and gala balls, complimenting even the grandest of events.
