Love, betrayal and revenge have never been portrayed with more ravishing beauty than in "Lucia di Lammermoor". Though the title character is indeed driven to insanity, it's the audience who goes nuts for Donizetti's tragic opera. The role of the title heroine who teeters between love and madness is shared by sopranos Olga Peretyatko-Mariotti and Pretty Yende, who have each impressed audiences with dazzling bel canto portrayals at the Met. Vittorio Grigolo and Michael Fabiano share the role of her lover. It's impossible not to be drawn into the tale of fragile Lucia, manipulated into marrying a man she doesn't love as she's used by her brother for his own political advancement. The scene when she finally "snaps" remains one of the most sublime -- and technically difficult -- in the entire operatic canon. Roberto Abbado conducts, while Tony winner Mary Zimmerman directs this chilling production of "Lucia di Lammermoor".
