Andrea Wood Biography
“The Duke Ellington School of the Arts graduate moves fearlessly up and down octaves, all the while maintaining a distinct sense of purpose.” -CapitalBop With a rich tone and intuitive feel, vocalist and composer Andrea Wood is in high demand as both a soloist and sideman in New York City and her home of Washington DC. Her music is simultaneously accessible and interesting, highlighting Wood’s stylistic versatility and impressive vocal ability. Wood is said to have “astonishing vocal range” that is “effective in conveying the emotions of a song” (Jazz Times Magazine). Andrea released her debut album “Dhyana” in 2011. The album was widely reviewed and enjoyed international radio play, leading Andrea and her band to a tour of south Florida in January 2012. The band has played at notable venues including the Kennedy Center, Constitution Hall, Twins Jazz Club, the Atlas Theater, and the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., as well as The Iridium, Smalls Jazz Club, and The Bitter End in New York City, and The National Center for the Performing Arts in Mumbai, India. Andrea completed her Masters of Music at The Manhattan School of Music in 2013. Andrea was the featured soloist with the MSM Jazz Philharmonic Orchestra for the Stan Kenton Centennial Concert, which is featured on the school’s newest CD release. Andrea sings for three diverse bands, in addition to her own modern Jazz band, in Washington D.C. and New York City including the French Gypsy-Jazz band The Hot Club of D.C., the neo-rock band Sleep.Shy, and the Nigerian afro-beat band Afrikan Rhapsody, led by former Femi Kuti drummer Tosin Aribisala. In 2012, Andrea performed with the Frank Zappa legacy band, Project Object featuring Ike Willis and Ray White of the original Frank Zappa Band. She has been featured on several albums, in addition to her own, including a recent recording with Bizzy Bone of Bone Thugs N’ Harmony. In the fall of 2013, Andrea and her band recently traveled to Mumbai, India for four months to serve as the inaugural faculty at the True School of Music. Andrea served as Chair of the Vocal Department there. The band was featured at the Jus’ Jazz Festival held in Delhi, Mumbai and Pune, India where they shared a bill with the Renee Rosnes Quartet featuring Lewis Nash, Peter Washington and Steve Wilson. www.andreawoodmusic.com www.youtube.com/user/drewoodmusic
