Christian Pincock Music Biography
"A real storyteller.” — Chris Rosenberg
"A lot of fire and energy" — Dave Liebmen
Christian Pincock is a trombonist and composer who's energetic and lyrical music pushes conventions while connecting with the essence of jazz.
His compositional approch is similar to the working process of a sculptor, refining a piece by removing layers of material leaving only the most important and integral elements. Christian began to develop his process through his studies with the late trombonist and composer Bob Brookmeyer, with whom he studied at New England Conservatory in the early 2000s. Since then he has explored a multitude of styles and techniques including the formal development techniques of Baroque and European Classical music; the rhythmic structures of samba, merengue, salsa, Hindustani music, and contemporary classical music; and the melodic and timbral possibilities of electronic music and free improvisation. Christian works to integrate these influences organically into his compositions
Christian has performed original music at venues and festivals across the United States including The Stone, Roulette, The Creative Soundspace Festival, The Society for the Activation of Social Space through Art and Sound, The Roost Creative Music Festival and The Ballard Jazz Festival.
In addition to composing new works for his own ensembles, Christian Pincock has composed and arranged for jazz big bands, brass ensembles, popular music groups, and experimental ensembles throughout the United States. He has shared the stage with well-known artists including Bobby Shew, Toshiko Akiyoshi, John Faddis, Butch Miles, Dave Douglas, Ikue Mori and Bob Brookmeyer.
Christian is also a touring artist and educator; he has performed and led workshops in jazz, composition and improvisation throughout the United States. He has presented at educational institutions including Cornish College of the Arts, University of New Mexico, University of Colorado–Colorado Springs, University of California–San Diego and at venues including The Center for Contemporary Art in Santa Fe, The International Society for Improvising Musicians annual convention, Music OMI International Artist Residency and The Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music.
He has taught at the University of New Mexico where he taught classes in Jazz Improvisation, Jazz Theory, Jazz Keyboard Skills and Music Essentials for Contemporary Dancers. He has directed the high school honor jazz bands and community big band and taught the high school students in the Summer Jazz Intensive at the New Mexico Jazz Workshop. He teaches private students locally as well as mobilly via skype and FaceTime and gives workshops in subjects such as jazz improvisation, effective practice techniques, brass techniques and conducted improvisation.
Christian has a Masters of Music degree in jazz studies from the Manhattan School of Music where he studied with Steve Turre and David Taylor and a Bachelor of music degree in jazz studies from New England Conservatory where he studied with Bob Brookmeyer, Bevan Manson, John Mosca and John McNeil.
