By Katie Moulton Shovels & Rope may be opening for the Avett Brothers this weekend, but the duo tends to leave behind a stage scorched with the heat of its performance. Cary Ann Hearst and former Coloradan Michael Trent comprise this folk-rock band, and their sets often display their intense intimacy as musicians and married partners, as they clearly communicate non-verbally from across the stage or while cozied up at a single microphone. Last year the pair released its fifth studio album, Little Seeds, which dug into topics like raising a baby in a violent world, and continued the group’s experimentation within its scuzzy Americana sound.
