Same Sex Mary Biography
Same Sex Mary want you to have a good time and they will make sure that you do. They're not going to stare at their pedals, they're not going to mutter, Hey good to be here, how you doing? after their third song. They will not merely give you the impression that they're having a good time. They will engage you, they will intrigue you, they will thoroughly rock your socks off. Why? Because they love you.
Led by opposite-sex couple James Howard Adams and Tsvetelina Stefanova, Same Sexy Mary formed in 2009. Confronted with the task of putting their college degrees to good use, they said to themselves, "Let's try to be rock stars instead." The band epitomizes the classic rock and roll ragbag of their Las Vegas bar-scene environment. Many of their songs could be scaled down to simple Americana folk tunes, but they are bolstered by rousing guitars and a Farfisa organ (played by Stefanova) that injects a hot urgency into each song.
The chemistry between Adams and Stefanova directs much of the band's character. The two have been together for well over a decade, and it shows in their music and in their performance. He's the goofball, eager to lay his soul bare and get down to the truth with a witty turn-of-phrase. She's the graceful counterpart, adding a sense of composure and sophistication to what the band means to say. Some of their best moments onstage happen when the two trade off vocal duties on songs that explore the trials of 21st century relationships.
Same Sex Mary has opened for Ty Segall and The Muggers, Thee Oh Sees, Deer Tick, Tijuana Panthers, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Screaming Females, and La Luz. They have performed at festivals such as Life Is Beautiful, Neon Reverb, and Life Is Shit. When they're not performing, they are hard at work in the form of their agency Bad Moon Booking, setting up national tours for bands from all over the United States.
