Lisa Marshall Band Biography

Soul-a-licious, folk-funk dusted with Rhythm and Blues is the music of Lisa Marshall. Sweet, refreshing and 'greezy' like a mint julep on a Hot Summer Day in the French Quarter in New Orleans!

"She's the little lady w/ the BIG voice! The Lisa Marshall Band takes their cues from the old school days of Soul when women more than carried their own. From Aretha to Etta to Gladys to Tina, Lisa Marshall takes it all in & churns it out true."- Luna Live

Lisa Marshall's latest CD, 'Stay Right Here' is a tribute to the music from the 60's/70's Soul explosion of Stax, Muscle Shoals, Motown and more. Use of string arrangements, three part harmony call and answer vocals ala The Sweet Inspirations, Wurlitzer and guitar licks weave the seam of the music.

"She is the female Otis Redding man. I could listen to this album all day"- Jivewired America
".. her voice belts and soars through the building lyrics then dips to a restrained contralto for climatic lines.." Rachel Dovey, Seattle Sound Magazine
‘Stay Right Here’ boasts Eric Johnson’s engineer, Kelly Donnelly behind the board on lead vocals, mixing and mastering. Johnny Radelat of Gary Clark Jr. appears on drums on the CD except for tracks 5 & 8. Nick Connolly of Delbert McClinton adds Wurlitzer and piano on tracks 1, 3, and 5. ‘Stay Right Here’ can be found on her official websitewww.lisamarshallmusic.com , itunes, spotify, and many other digital media outlets.

"Marshall has a point of view, but she combines her power packed vocals with lyrics that have a universal appeal...with Stay Right Here, Lisa Marshall has put together a combination of these insightful lyrics along with solid tunes and vocals that a lot of people will relate to as if this album was made just for them..." The Lisa Marshall Band, is Lisa Marshall on Vocals/Rhythm Guitar, Greg Amani Smith on Bass, Matt Danko on Drums, & Joel Lamb on Keys.
The band recently headlined The Beaumont Blues and Jazz Festival 2013, and backed the legendary Barbara Lynn on her hits such as 'You'll Loose a Good Thing' and 'I'm A Good Woman'. A true honor for Lisa with her deep love and passion for the women of early Soul/R&B and Blues.
The band live is an ever evolving sound of folk/funk, garage R&B jam, and improv, taking the songs and the audience on a unique journey every performance.
“The cocktail that is her music (a funky, soulful blues) can’t really be called fusion, but more a stirred Motown mixer. Lisa Marshall is on the fast track of positioning herself as one Austin’s staple female artists.” -Steven Blythe, Austin Post

Lisa moved to Austin in Spring of 2009 and begin playing such rooms as Continental Club, Saxon Pub, and Antone’s, having the opportunity to share stages with Lavelle White, Barbara Lynn, Doyle Bramhall, W.C. Clark, Patrice Pike and Sister 7, Carolyn Wonderland, Malford Milligan, Bill Carter and more.

She hails most recently from Seattle. There she performed solo with, “The Blonde”, her semi-hollow body electric guitar, and was often joined by the raucous, three part call-and-answer trio, The Dirty Girls! She released her first solo CD titled ‘Simple’ in May of 2008. The group was invited to the famous Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, TN. as the feature for The Sunday ‘Songwriter’s Spotlight’. ‘Simple‘ can be heard in regular rotation on KOOP, KAZI ;Austin, TX., WWOZ; New Orleans, LA. and various radio in Europe as well as making it on to 2 Top 5 Euro-Americana Charts.

Born and raised in Virginia Beach, VA, she spent her early years on the Chesapeake Bay. Her young parents possessed a large vinyl collection; Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, Motown, Funk to Disco, was a constant in the house. Lisa remembers hours of sitting on the sand filled carpet with the album insert of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young 4 Way Street, reading the lyrics and singing along to 'Cowgirl In The Sand' with her younger sister. "I have always loved harmonies. I loved that album for their harmonies. Looking back it's so fitting that I would sing that song. Living literally across the street from the beach our carpet sounded like a giant bean bag when you walked on it. I guess I thought I was the cowgirl." (laughs)...more like a gypsy"

At the age of 21, Marshall moved to California. It was in L.A. where she co-founded and fronted Peculiar Boogie with Rebekah Coltman (guitar) & Susan Joyner (keys) for a decade. Their band was a unique blend of female fronted “Brit” Rock featuring R&B style vocals and harmonies. The band played and showcased at some of L.A’s hot spots such as Troubadour, and the Roxy. Robben Ford, Koko Taylor, and Big Brother and the Holding Company are some of the acts that Peculiar Boogie supported. The band received air play in California and Europe regularly.

A full time musician in Austin since 2009, Lisa plays solo and with her band all over Texas while focusing on an online presence and overseas touring and
festivals.
