Friday December 2 & Saturday December 3, 2016
Richard Eaton Singers
RES Brass Quintet
Leonard Ratzlaff, Conductor
Jeremy Spurgeon, Organ
Leanne Regehr, Piano
Featuring Advent Song, a commission by Stephanie Martin, Composer

Concert of Christmas favourites featuring a wide range of repertoire for choir, organ and brass quintet including, of course, In Dulci Jubilo by Baroque composer Michael Praetorius, which will be sung in in German, although well known in its English text version, Ye Christian Men Rejoice. Canadian composer Andrew Ager's arrangement will feature the RES brass quintet. Another Baroque composer to be featured is Heinrich Schütz, and his wonderful 6-part setting of Hodie, Christus natus est with both small groups and soloists.

Returning to the stage a decade after RES last sang the iconic Christmas Cantata by American composer Daniel Pinkham, and having performed it only once himself early in his career, Conductor and RES Artistic Director, Len Ratzlaff is looking forward to bringing you this gem of the seasonal repertoire.

Another work RES performed a number of years ago was John Rutter's great setting of the Gloria. For this concert Len has chosen a newer setting, premiered just last year, by another Brit, Bob Chilcott; it is a brilliant setting that he is sure you will enjoy!

We will also be performing a number of shorter settings of carols (including some with you, the audience!) by Canadian and British composers, including some by David Willcocks, to commemorate his death just a year ago.

Finally, though, we are thrilled to bring you a newly commissioned work for choir, brass and organ by Toronto composer/conductor of Pax Christi Chorale Stephanie Martin. This 8-minute composition, with the title Advent Song, has text from an evocative poem by Alberta poet and Anglican clergyman Robert Pynn.
