War Memorial Opera House
455 Franklin St., San Francisco, CA 94102
The San Francisco Ballet defines 21st-century dance with its combination of cutting-edge works and classical favorites, under the stellar guidance of Helgi Tomasson, its artistic director and principal choreographer. Catch two performances from the upcoming 2017 season at the beautiful War Memorial Opera House. Up first is "The Joy of Dance", which includes Tomasson's "Haffner Symphony", dubbed "sublime -- as festive as it is an embodiment of beauty" by "The New York Times", as well as Justin Peck's "In the Countenance of Kings", a cool new work set to a Sufjan Stevens score. The second program highlights "Modern Masters", and features Alexei Ratmansky's delicate neoclassical piece "Seven Sonatas" and William Forsythe's pulsating "Pas/Parts 2016", which the "Chronicle" called "dense in detail, yet airy in effect."
