Citizen of the World Biography

Citizen of the World has built on the success of the foot stomping Folk-Rock genre, popularised by the likes of Mumford & Sons, to carve a new genre described by one competition judge as Epic Folk. The band successfully combines the unique sound of the saxophone with acoustic folk and traditional rock to have you reflecting on the stories that shape your life. Since forming in 2012, the band has played at various venues and band competitions around Sydney, toured India, released their first EP and is now releasing their second music video. The band started in Lausanne, Switzerland in 2012 when lead singer / songwriter Gerrit Gmel began jamming with old friends and writing songs inspired by life events at the time. Moving to Sydney, Australia later that year, Gerrit re-established the band with new members. The new formation brings sax, acoustic guitar, keyboard, drums and bass together to take you on a journey from soulful acoustic melodies to foot thumping beats best described by one music blog Timber and Steel as “infectious and incredibly danceable.” Citizen of the World has played at venues around Sydney such as the Factory Theatre, The Lair, Spectrum, Robin Hood Hotel and others as part of residencies, one off gigs and as finalists in several band competitions. They have also played at outdoor events such as the Glebe Steet Fair, Pyrmont Food & Wine Festival and Coogee Family Fun Day and busked around the city and Eastern Suburbs. Citizen of the World has also been played on radio stations across the country on stations including 4ZZZ (Brisbane), 3D Radio (Adelaide), 2RRR FM (Sydney) and SYN FM (Melbourne) and have been added to commercial and retail playlists both in Australia and the USA. In 2013 the band toured India, performing in Delhi, Mumbai and Pune. With the release of the latest music video filmed along the beautiful Coogee Beach, How Far We’ve Come, the band hopes to grow their exposure not just within Sydney, but also across Australia. The band has ambitious plans for the future, with an Australian tour the next logical step. “For us it has always been about taking it as far as it can go” Gerrit says. It takes passion and commitment to write and perform music that people love to listen to. “At the end of the day” Gerrit remarks, “this is the thing I am most proud of. Music is the most satisfying and pure form of expressing what is going on inside your head. For the listener, it is an escape where you can reflect on happy or emotional times, and the people you care about.” www.citizenoftheworldmusic.com Citizen of the World's songs range from folk-rock to jazz, drawing their inspiration from those stories that shape your life
