This master class is a part of the Count Basie curriculum at the Oakland Public Conservatory of Music. Angela Wellman, Founding Director, has designed the Basie curriculum to draw attention to the importance of understanding the blues and the Basie tradition. The fundamentals and style that Basie embodies are integral to the creation and development of jazz. Using authentic, original charts direct from the Basie library, spanning the decades from the days of Buck Clayton's "Avenue C" to the more contemporary arrangements of Sammy Nestico's "Wind Machine," the Count Basie curriculum brings Basie's music to Oakland, creating an interactive living museum for the in-depth study of musical legacy of Count Basie.
