The LA Phil does baroque with this season-long series, welcoming some of the finest, most innovative early-music ensembles from across the globe to their stage at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown L.A. The series kicks off with L'Arpeggiata, the acclaimed European group led by therobo/harp virtuoso Christina Pluhar, which is known for jazzing up the music of Monteverdi and others with their unique improvisational jams. The Venice Baroque Orchestra is set to bring their Italian flair to their countryman Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons", spotlighting exciting violinist Nicola Benedetti. The viol consort Fretwork, whose vast repertoire includes works from 1501 to the present, performs a variety of "In Nomine" pieces, an English form derived from Taverner's setting of the Benedictus, and Bach's Mass in B minor, considered one of the most stirring musical works ever composed, closes out the series.
