"Apikorsim (Heretics)," the title track of the Klezmatics' new album, suggests that if you're going to embrace such unkosher pursuits as drinking to excess, eating pork, or forgoing circumcision, you might as well savor them to the max. Rabble-rousing rebels in their own right, the Klezmatics celebrate thirty years of joyously inventive klezmer with a concert that will draw from a rich, deep repertoire that embraces tradition, modernism, and the folk music of Woody Guthrie. From their 1988 debut, Shvaygn = Toyt (Silence = Death), the Klezmatics have also imbued their music with political awareness, suggesting that the struggle continues no matter how far you think you've come from the shtetl. History and culture, solidarity and rebellion — the Klezmatics embody all these things, and throw a great dance party to boot.
