Bobby Hurricane Spencer Blues All Stars Biography
Vocalist, saxophonist and songwriter/arranger, the bluesman Bobby Hurricane Spencer has a musical past that has spanned over 45 years. Born in Detroit, Michigan, he arrived in Alameda, CA by way of Arkansas at the tender age of eleven months. Oakland in the Sixties: There was Al's House of Smiles, the Showcase, the Sportsman, Ester's Orbit Room and the Continental Club. Later the Shalamar and Troyce Keu's famous Eli's Mile Mile High Club. If you were lucky enough to have heard the soul pumping from these clubs then you know the Hurricane. That's cause he was anchored dead center in the horn section of those bands. His music can be found on records by Koko Taylor, Sonny Rhodes, JJ Bad Boy Johnson, Jimmy McCracklin, Johnny Tolbert and De Thanks, Marvin Holmes and the Uptights and many more. Most recently in the Fall of 2013 he was inducted into the Living Legends Foundation which has honored such legendary musicians as Les McCann and Barbara Morrison. Footnote: In addition to his musical career, the Hurricane is proud of his role as a single parent, raising three of his children alone while at the same time teaching full time in the Los Angeles Unified School District for nearly 30 years. His work with transitioning minority children from Hispanic languages to English is legendary and he is revered by his students. It happened one night on the bandstand - After a particularly hot sax solo, J.J. Bad Boy Jones turned to the tenor man and said, "Bob, you the Hurricane!"
