Anne of the Wolves Biography
Melbourne based quintet, Anne of the Wolves combine dark folk tones, sultry blues, gypsy jazz noir and wistful piano pop creating a hauntingly melancholy sound that is truly their own. Formed by wailing chanteuse and song-writer Bek Chapman, (The Nymphs), Anne of the Wolves toys with ideas of death, depression, fear and obsession. Sonically, this is created by Chapman's versatile vocals and playful Carol King/ Tori Amos influenced piano styles, forming the basis of the group's dynamic. Chapman's harsh growls, operatic kookiness and vocal purity is complimented Stirling Gill-Chambers (The Bon Scotts) on violin and Nathaniel Poynter (The Woo Hoo Review) who create breathy ethereal atmosphere before leading the merry dance while Hayley Jones-Buckley and Matt Gibson (Pinky Beecroft) make up the cool, calm but cracking rhythm section, holding the chaos together, weaving in and out with intricate base lines and thunderously transcendent percussion, both rolling with and then tempering the powerful melodic storm. Since releasing their debut EP, "Rainmaker" in 2013, they have supported local music veterans the DC3 (formerly TISM), and Eddie Perfect. They have also opened for international touring acts Kristen Hersh and Ade Edmondson, whilst performing regularly throughout well-known Melbourne venues. After a successful crowd-funding campaign, Anne of the Wolves is set to release singles, a film clip and an album in 2016! Stay tuned! Melodramatic folk-pop jazz-noir. Fusing pop melancholia, upbeat playfulness, thunderous percussion, wailing vocals and epic instrumentals.
