NoPop Biography
NoPop is a Brooklyn-based pink punk, moxy-rock trio comprised of Oscar Rodriguez on lead vocals and bass, Louis Cohen on electric guitar, and Rachel Housle on drums and occasional lead vocals. The band was formed by Cohen and Rodriguez in June of 2013 but didn’t finalize its identity until Housle joined in September of the same year. NoPop pulls its sound from punk bands Minutemen and The Birthday Party, alt bands The Breeders and Pixies, No-Wave bands DNA and Sonic Youth, and experimental bands Deerhoof and Melt-Banana. The band describes its sound as pink punk - an amalgam of pretty pop melodies, punk drives, and caffeine. After the success of its "See Pretty” EP in March* of 2014 (recorded at Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen in Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn), NoPop is making plans to return to the studio winter 2014 to cut a 10-12 song double EP with new tunes like “Idol High” - a fast track about Beyoncé’s portrayal as a godly figure, “Pink Punk” - an attack on NoPop’s previous comparisons to Pixies (which were actually totally accurate), “Fiction Love” - a stoner’s trip into self-worship and incest, and “Bowling Alley” - a child’s nightmarish vision of a bowling alley that caters to devils and demons. "NoPop is everything your rock band wants to be." -DINGUS "NoPop’s sound is live in essence, clearly the work of a sympathetic and potent trio playing together, and yet bursting at its seams, as if constantly threatening to completely detonate and blow up into something much bigger and scarier. They’re a far-out party on stage and a creepy seance in the studio. In some ways you could say they’re a perfect band." -El Presidente of Mama Coco's Funky Kitchen "NoPop pretty much gave us what fans of The Pixies have been hoping to get since the 'Doolittle' years: music that's at once unpretentious, unpredictable, wildly explosive and absolutely memorable." - The Deli Magazine "NoPop has my full attention" -Ground Floor Go ("See Pretty" awarded Album of the Week) It's all here. Well, some of it. http://nopop.bandcamp.com/ That Brooklyn-based pink-punk trio.
