A favorite at The Met in New York, Diana Damrau is set to make a Hollywood-style splash in her LA Opera debut by tackling the roles of all four heroines in Jacques Offenbach's "Tales of Hoffmann", conducted by Plácido Domingo as part of a lavish production at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Tenor Vittorio Grigolo (who starred in the role at The Met) plays the real-life poet E.T.A. Hoffmann, who pines after the prima donna performing next door to his local tavern. While he waits for her show to end, he reminisces over three of his lost loves, in fanciful stories featuring a beautiful automaton, a voice from the dead and a scheming courtesan -- all performed by Damrau. Offenbach's witty libretto and compelling score have made "Tales of Hoffmann" popular around the world, and it's presented here in its original French with projected English translations.
