Door 8 / Show 8:30World Music Dance Party!Zulu Spear has a long, vibrant and storied history, originally formed by the late South African Exhile-singer-composer-dancer, Sechaba Mokeoena, in (1984); the early band featured three women dancers and singers and three current band members, Ron Van Leeuwaarde, Matthew Lacques and Jerome Leonard. The band was an instant hit and played throughout the Bay Area and California in its formative years.  The band really hit its stride when Sechaba invited dancer Morgan-Nhlapo and dancer/vocalist Gideon Bendile to join the band in (1986). Gideon's key knowledge of the music and harmonies of South Africa help anchor the vocal blend and arrangements that have kept Zulu Spear's audiences singing and smiling for decades.  The band has been home to musicians from Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Surinam, United States and trilled audiences through the U.S and Canada.Candela has two related meanings in Spanish, candle and fire. In the old days drummers would light a small fire to heat up and tune their drums. "Darle candela al tambor" ("Set the drums on fire"). Candela is a nine piece Salsa band, based in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1987, and their original repertoire explores a wide variety of Latin rhythms including Son, Bolero, Mambo, Cha-cha-chá, Merengue, and the more contemporary Timba, combined with a touch of Jazz, which make the band enjoyable for dancers as well as listeners. The band is also versatile in instrumental Latin Jazz.Tom Rigney, the fiery, electrifying violinist/composer, joins forces with some of the finest musicians on the SF roots music scene to form Tom Rigney and Flambeau, a band that generates enough heat and energy to ignite a dance floor or lift an audience to its feet. Now in its second decade as the leader of Flambeau, the flamboyant Rigney has leapt dramatically into the spotlight as a performer and a composer.
