Founded in 2009, AZA is a Santa Cruz based band which unites traditional Tamazight (Berber) music, indigenous to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, with other global influences. Evocative of Saharan-African blues, but with an original style that defies categorization, AZA’s stirring performances feature deep, danceable rhythms, intricate string melodies, and soaring, soulful vocals. AZA has produced two albums of original compositions, and performed at music festivals, clubs, and universities around the United States and abroad. In 2006, AZA embarked on its first of three annual summer tours to Morocco to perform at music festivals throughout the country. Tonight’s performance features the band’s founders, Fattah Abbou and Mohamed Aoualou with special guest, Brahim Fribgane. Fattah Abbou and Mohamed Aoualou are Berbers native to the High Atlas mountain region of Morocco who are recognized as master musicians. Moroccan-born percussionist and oud player, Brahim Fribgane, who moved to Albuquerque in 2014, has played with artists ranging from Peter Gabriel to Pete Seeger, Harry Belafonte, Larry Coryell, Zakir Hussain, and Morphine. Since moving to New Mexico he has collaborated with a variety of NM artists including percussionist, Jefferson Voorhees; the eclectic band, Pray for Brain; and guitarist Bruce Dunlap and pianist John Rangel (Trio en Medio).
