The Girl Fridas Biography

Fighting the patriarchy by daylight and making music by moonlight: Alice, Bianca and Shannon are The Girl Fridas. Since forming in Melbourne in October 2013, The Girl Fridas have had a busy year, playing The Festival of the Photocopier with Sydney’s The Cult 45s; Found Festival’s Wayward Sounds with Mangelwurzel, The Perfections and OUCH My Face; supporting Adelaide’s The Rocketeers on the Melbourne leg of their PHAZER East Coast Tour; playing as House Band at FEMINISTMAS 2014, and headlining the Jitter Records inaugural Jitterfest in Sydney. The Girl Fridas chose their name for a multitude of reasons, primarily for the feminist heroes they wanted to pay homage to – Frieda Hughes (as a reference to Sylvia Plath) and the struggles we all face as daughters, Frida Lyngstad from pop pioneers ABBA, Freida Pinto – an admirable WOC in Hollywood, a throwback to the term Girl Friday (an old term for a secretary or receptionist, a gopher. Ringing true to The Girl Fridas DIY ethos – doing it for themselves!), the idea that it closely rhymes with The Breeders (the Deal sisters being a HUGE inspiration), and of course Frida Kahlo. Kahlo is known for overcoming adversity throughout her life – her struggles regarding her sexuality, her national identity, living with chronic pain, reconciling a positive body image and the emotional toll of the compulsion to make art. Kahlo represents a woman who was dedicated to the feminist cause and a reminder that giving up the fight is not an option. The Girl Fridas are due to release their debut EP, The Girl Fridas Love You, through Jitter Records in the first half of 2015. The Girl Fridas Love You was recorded in October 2014 by Amy Bennett and mastered by Jess Cooper, making it an all-female production (and possibly an industry first). The Girl Fridas Love You will feature the songs Dreaming - a heady summer jam, 4am - a slow, bass-y groove with Nico-esque vocals, Ideal Weekend - a frenetic ode to staying in bed and watching TV with a lover, and Body Police - a bratty feminist anthem renouncing conventional beauty standards. Fighting the patriarchy by daylight and making music by moonlight: Alice, Bianca and Shannon are The Girl Fridas.
