For French composer Hector Berlioz, it was a performance of "Romeo and Juliet" at the Odéon Theatre in Paris in 1827 that first inspired his large-scale symphonic adaptation of Shakespeare's romantic tragedy -- a work that would ultimately rank among the finest works of his lifetime. More than a decade later, Berlioz's tour de force choral symphony finally got its debut at the Paris Conservatoire (with Wagner in the audience, no less). Now, after tackling his monumental "Requiem" in May, the San Francisco Symphony and Chorus are bringing Berlioz's "Romeo and Juliet" to the Davies Hall stage. Acclaimed opera singers Luca Pisaroni, Nicholas Phan and Sasha Cooke complete the cast to bring Shakespeare's romantic masterwork to life like you've never experienced it before, all under the baton of legendary San Francisco Symphony music director Michael Tilson Thomas.
