To call French composer Hector Berlioz's "Requiem: Grande Messe de Morts" one of music's most monumental undertakings is an understatement. Between the literally hundreds of musicians and singers required to perform this powerful piece and the complex conducting it demands, the work is not only a wonder to hear, but a spectacle you have to see to believe. Artistic director and principal conductor of the famed Royal Philharmonic, Grammy-winning maestro Charles Dutoit returns to Davies Hall to wield the baton for an ensemble of more than 400, which includes four brass ensembles, the Young Women's Choral Project of San Francisco, the Golden Gate Men's Chorus, tenor Paul Groves and the full San Francisco Symphony and Chorus.
