Yuri Temirkanov, music director and principal conductor Nikolai Lugansky, piano Russia's oldest symphony orchestra and one of the world's greatest will fill EJ Thomas Hall with its soul-stirring signature sound. "We play with our hearts," says concertmaster Lev Klychkov. Formed in 1882, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic was initially known as the "Imperial Music Choir" and performed privately for the court of Alexander III of Russia. Richard Strauss conducted it in 1912. The St. Petersburg Philharmonic we know today has earned legendary status as the pre-eminent exponent of the modern Russian symphonic tradition. Its performances in the concert hall and on record have established a reputation of unparalleled excellence throughout the world, leading The Guardian of London to declare in March 2003 that the St. Petersburg Philharmonic is "probably the world's greatest orchestra." Pre-concert talk at 6:30 p.m.
