the Gills Biography
“Some bands overcome obstacle after obstacle to become who they are today, and The Gills are one of those bands. It’s not hard to tell even better things are to come.”
- - Idobi Radio
This second EP is the follow up to 1 that featured their break-out single “Lemonade” that got attention and support from Beats 1/Apple Music (premiered the track on Ebro Darden’s show), Consequence of Sound, Alternative Press, Absolute Punk - and Conan O’Brien debuted the video for the song on his Team Coco website.
“…..The band delivers in your face jams…” - Absolute Punk
With this new EP frontman, Jesse Wheeler dives deeper into his roots and what got him into music. Wheeler was diagnosed with Leukemia as a young teen and started writing songs from his hospital bed. He started writing funny songs with kitschy guitar melodies to lighten his mood, and the mood of his friends and family, who kept him company at his bedside. Music became an important coping mechanism for Wheeler, a roll which continues to play into his adult life. Along with Jesse’s personal story, the EP dives into the band's initial struggles upon first moving to Nashville from Pensacola to pursue music more full time, including huddling around the stove as their only source of heat in the brutal 2010 winter in Nashville.
Rounding out The Gills alongside Wheeler is Kansas transplant Justin Locke on keys and guitar lending a psychedelic element to The Gills sound. Holding down the rhythm section are Brothers Matt (drums) and Andy (bass) Prince. The brothers grew up perfecting their musical kinship playing together in church, but punk rock came calling and the brothers abandon the church approved music for The Gills. Andy balances his time in the Gills alongside his other roll, holding down bass duties for Manchester Orchestra.
