Tenor saxophonist from New York with an adventurous flow. "A style that goes through everything and clings in your memory (JazzNu). Big surprise at the North Sea Jazz.

Tenor James Brandon Lewis is already a few years tongues wagging among jazz critics but at the North Sea Jazz Festival, he proved that he can keep a wide audience in its grip. Its powerful game was formerly dominated by gospel and Afro-American poetry, but today he improvises with the flow of a rapper.

His recent album Days of Freeman is infused with positive self-consciousness of hip-hop from the 90s include A Tribe Called Quest. The dub Lee Scratch Perry and raw funk jazz of Ornette Coleman's Prime Time are important influences. The audience at North Sea Jazz responded enthusiastically to the "super muscular sound of the 31-year-old tenor saxophonist" (de Volkskrant).

"The in Buffalo, New York based tenor saxophonist James Brandon Lewis will make a bold set of dangerously pointy jazz forward, propped up by a two-man rhythm section. His game is steeped Ornette Coleman and James Blood Ulmer, the same drive and vitriolic improvisations, a man to watch (Jazzism).

'Street-smart, Firmly rooted in hip-hop ancestry yet crafted to honor the tenets of inspired jazz improvisation' (Jazz Times).
