Orlande de Lassus (c. 1532 - 1594)Missa Osculetur me a8 and motets
Pre-Concert Lecture 7:00 PM
The Song of Songs remains one of the most beautiful collections of biblical poetry, a celebration of erotic love. Christians also read into it an allegory of the marriage of Christ and the Church. Song of Songs texts are frequently used in praise of the Virgin Mary. Lassus was not a stranger to the tradition of Renaissance settings of these texts, and his setting are among the most beautiful. His Missa Osculetur me for eight voices, a parody mass composed on Lassus' equally beautiful motet, is one of the quintessential examples of this genre. Completing the program will be motets from the Song of Songs and Marian antiphons from the lavish Bavarian court chapel of the Wittlesbacher Dukes;noted patrons of music and the Arts.
