This term's Choral Society concert has a Germanic theme, including notable music by Romantic composers Bruch and Mendelssohn. The major work is by an Englishman, however, who was inspired to compose From the Bavarian Highlands after an enjoyable holiday in Upper Bavaria in 1894. Both music and lyrics (by the composer's wife) are an attractive reflection of the folk music of the region. Bruch's justly popular Violin Concerto is performed by Form 7 music scholar, Jessica Tomey, while younger music scholar, Beth Whitlock, performs the solo part in Mendelssohn's famous Hear my prayer, known for its beautiful closing section setting the words 'O for the wings of a dove'. Three movements from Mendelssohn's Christus are the rarity on the programme, looking forward to Christmas in what promises to be a feast of wonderful music.
