Davies Symphony Hall
201 Van Ness Ave, San Francisco, CA 94102
Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony are throwing a party disguised as a concert at Davies Hall, boasting multi-sensory delights like jazz dancers, big-screen visuals and an eclectic selection of modern works. Mezzo-soprano Measha Brueggergosman is set to be on hand for the West Coast premiere of MTT's own song cycle, "Four Preludes on Playthings of the Wind". Based on a poem by Carl Sandburg, MTT captures the spirit of a bash thrown the night before the end of civilization, which the composer-conductor calls "fun, and a bit outrageous too." You'll also experience a pair of influential 20th-century works by Charles Ives, a piece by American Gamelan master Lou Harrison that combines sound from an Indonesian instrument group with classical violin, and a 1920s-inspired cabaret version of Antheil's "A Jazz Symphony".
