Davies Symphony Hall
201 Van Ness Ave, San Francisco, CA 94102
Praised for her "balanced lyricism and fire" ("The New York Times"), acclaimed German violinist Arabella Steinbacher joins conductor Fabio Luisi and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra for a performance of Beethoven's one and only violin concerto. It also happens to be one of his best-loved and most challenging works, brimming with playful energy and moments of powerful serenity. Also on the bill for this concert at Davies Symphony Hall are Robert Strauss' tone poem "Don Juan" and Carl Nielsen's Symphony No. 6. This 1925 piece was the beloved Danish composer's final work and features a second movement, "Humoreske", in which Nielsen pits a triangle, glockenspiel and side drum against one another in a "quarrel, each sticking to his own tastes and inclinations," reflecting its modern aesthetic.
