Grizzly Waves Biography

Grizzly Waves is the project of Canadian singer-songwriter Luke MacDonald. He writes songs about adventure, love and the search for something beyond self. The EP "I'm Alive, You Are The Whole Creation, Let Our Frequencies Rise" (2014) was his first release, a self-produced effort combining hard hitting folk songs with lo-fi textures. In the studio MacDonald builds a sonic landscape with layers of instrumentation, while live performances are stripped down to guitar and voice; allowing subtlety, nuance and raw emotion to fill the room. Shortly after the release of "I'm Alive…" MacDonald hit the road with his songs, taking them to the bars, cafes and streets of nearly every major city in Canada and meeting passionate audiences and individuals at every stop. Drawing inspiration from the strong and beautiful people and landscapes of his country, Grizzly Waves started crafting songs aiming to capture the energy and emotion of the journey. That journey continued from the road into the studio, where MacDonald paired up with long time friend and producer Gerald Van Wyk to turn this collection of songs into a beautiful album filled with lush strings, horns and keys as well as a powerful rhythm section. The result is a two-part EP titled "The Wild Life" scheduled released in Fall 2015 and Spring 2016. Grizzly Waves has also paired up with Raincoast Conservation Foundation for the release of "The Wild Life", 50% of all album sales will be directly donated to Raincoast. For more information, visit the Advocacy page. Much has happened since the inception of Grizzly Waves, as MacDonald notes in the song "Brothers", "This past year has lasted a lifetime/ But not that much has changed/ I've walked miles I didn't know existed but the core of my soul remains the same". With continual progression fuelled by uncompromising passion, the future holds much for Grizzly Waves. Catch him across Canada on "The Wild Life" tour this fall. Honest songs about existence.
