About this concert
By Andi Harriman In June of 1988, A Guy Called Gerald's "Voodoo Ray" hit Manchester's most important and influential dancefloor: the Haçienda. The track's tribalistic TR-808 drum machine pattern, squelchy bassline, and hypnotic vocal samples propelled its creator (birth name: Gerald Simpson) into acid house history. Gerald and his contemporaries, influenced by jazz funk, electro, and hip-hop, brought house music to the burgeoning U.K. club scene, providing the soundtrack for the rising rave culture. With nearly thirty years in the DJ trenches, Gerald has kept his career intact with his group 808 State, collaborations with the likes of Frankie Knuckles and Herbie Hancock, and a tour with former Haçienda owners New Order. Expect his set to be a wild assortment of everything from old-school acid classics to groovy drum'n'bass tracks, under the blessing of Good Room's disco ball.
