FRAMIX, le Lucky Coyote Pour son 4ème album, Framix rebat les cartes d’un jeu où se mélangent le rock des années 50, le folk, la pop, le dub ou le calypso. Après le succès du cinématographique Stuck In A Cruel World (2012), François Michel revient à des méthodes plus souples et trouve un équilibre étonnant entre une musique enjouée et des textes volontiers sombres. Lucky Monkeys est un vrai faux “feel good record” : à l’ironie blessée des textes répondent des mélodies et gimmicks accrocheurs, des inventions sonores, des guitares rythmiques et des chœurs merveilleux. Claviers et bidouille rehaussent ces nouvelles chansons, où la modernité se loge au détour d’arrangements toujours surprenants. “ - Framix, Framix, où vis-tu ? - Parfois je vis dans mon coin de campagne, parfois je vis en ville ” Tout ce que vous devez savoir sur Framix est là, dans Half a Coyote, l’irrésistible single qui ouvre le quatrième album du Nantais, qui se décrit volontiers en “gentil Redneck”. Heureux propriétaire d’un coin de nature sauvage, l’auteur compositeur touche-à-tout y passe la moitié de son temps, dans sa cabane, sur ou sous son tracteur, entouré de ses moutons. Pas en gentleman farmer ni en hippie mais plutôt en quête d’un nécessaire retrait. Cette même quête qui le conduisit – juste avant l’enregistrement du disque - à passer quelques jours seul au fin fond d’une forêt de l’Alabama, avec pour seuls compagnons son couteau et une boite d’allumettes. Une aventure revigorante où il a fallu transformer une vieille bâche en toile de tente, réunir des réserves de bois, fabriquer ses hameçons et pêcher ses poissons. Ce rapport fusionnel à la nature nourrit les textes de Lucky Monkeys, un titre ironique qui trahit la colère d’un homme face à ce que ses congénères et leur planète sont devenus. Nous sommes les singes chanceux, sacrés champions de l’évolution pour avoir réussi à mettre au pas l’ensemble des autres espèces et notre milieu naturel. Mais à la pesanteur des discours, Framix préfère poser un regard enfantin sur les choses et jouer sur la légèreté de chansons balancées entre rock fifties, doo-wop, folk et dub, avec la touche caribéenne pour le supplément soleil. Give Me Five est à ce titre une petite merveille rebondie, exercice de haute voltige camouflant un texte très noir sur la vie comme mascarade sociale. La richesse instrumentale de Lucky Monkeys (et notamment du diptyque qui lui donne son titre) est d’autant plus impressionnante qu’elle est le fruit du travail d’un homme seul. Au fil des expériences grandeur nature qu’il a menées deux années durant sur ses chansons, comme un sympathique Docteur Frankenstein, Framix a presque tout fait seul, jouant de chaque instrument à la maison, limitant l’usage du studio aux seules prises de batterie et de basse. C’est un retour aux méthodes souples et aux bricolages de Happy Animals (2009), une nouvelle affirmation de son goût du neuf et de la surprise. Un goût qui conduit Framix à évoluer en quintet sur scène, pour mieux revisiter et réarranger un répertoire où se mêlent battements jamaicains, riffs western, échos hawaiens. FRAMIX, toute une histoire : - Framix est le projet de François Michel depuis la fin des années 90 - Son premier album, Framix, paraît en 2001, savant mélange d’électro ambiant, de reggae et de musique des îles. - En 2009, Happy Animals se rapproche du format chanson en brassant joyeusement les genres. - En 2012, Stuck In A Cruel World est une nouvelle étape, un disque scénarisé et réalisé en technicolor, salué et soutenu par France Inter, Radio Nova et Fip (pour qui il donne un concert au studio 105). L’album est accompagné par un court métrage pour lequel François Michel a tout fait, des décors à la réalisation. - On retrouve aussi sa musique sur d’autres images, notamment le titre A Place To Be, dont les accents doo-wop illustrent la campagne mondiale de publicité Citroën C4 en 2014. BIOGRAPHY 2012 With a style and a band anchored in the 50's and 60's, the third album of Framix, Stuck In Cruel A World, construes ten songs in technicolor, in a perfect balance between nostalgia and youthful enthusiasm. From the Rock n roll of Sam Phillips's label Sun, to the reggae of 'Scratch' Perry's label Black Ark, it is a music that cunjors poetic pictures leaving us with mental postcards. A technicolor aesthetic sends us directly back to the 50's and 60's, Stuck In Cruel A World is a studio disc, as one would talk about studio film, with hand made settings and a very unique manner of fashioning a universe with different materials: rock n roll, ska, reggae, rhythm n blues and soul. Framix's third album is the fruit of two years of trials and tribulations in the studio, with the support of Yann Jaffiol (My Studio, Nantes). It is there that a nostalgic bend in style has been drawn and henceforth liberated the music from machines and samples, recorded with old equipment but with new ideas. Between nonchalance and excitement, Framix's melodies are rhythmic and swaying, with swooning guitars and tangy keyboards. With confusing nimbleness, the voice of François Michel slalomes in nostalgia with a smile in the corner of his mouth. Half way between the American studio Sun Records and the Jamaican Black Ark Studio, Stuck In Cruel A World is a potential course of treatment for revitalizing ones youth. FRAMIX HAS MADE A FILM For his third album, Framix sets the setting: A drive in, the teddyboys, the radio that crackles rock n roll with adverts for the future, the innocence and the enthusiasm of the 50's and 60's, the adolescence of a modern world today throwing it's last dice. It is the deep originality of François Michel's project : Ever since the beginning of Framix, the images and music create a universe that has never been so coherent as on Stuck In cruel A World, thought out and arranged like a great movie, with dialogues and songs put together like scenes. We hear Candy and Billy, two young lovers mysteriously threatened. Their two scenes open each of the two parts of the album. We could easily believe borrowed from American Graffiti but they were infact written and recorded for the occasion, like a short film that accompanies the disc. In this dream of a golden age we fantasize in these technicolor songs, gliding us into the contemporary shadow of solitude, we become enriched by visiting these eras. FRAMIX, SCENE 3, TAKEN 2 Preceded by two trailers, the singles The Big Falls and I Can’t Refuses It in 2011 (playlist RADIO NOVA and France INTER), Stuck In Cruel A World is a new step in the journey of François Michel, alone on the controls of Framix since the end of the 90's. A first album in 2001 (Framix, mixed ambient électro with reggae and the music of the islands), collaborations (Kazamix) and then the craving to speak with the world. In 2009, Happy Animals is an important turning point: without losing his handyman tools for sound, his machines and his love of reggae, Framix comes close to formating a song.
