The Story and The Song Biography

The Story and The Song really started more than 10 years ago when brothers Gary and Kyle Segars began a group called "Broken Music Box." "Both of us played in different bands back then, and we started to write songs together that wouldn't really fit our groups," says Gary, the older brother. "But we thought the songs were good, and we enjoyed playing together." 'Broken Music Box' was never really an official project, but the two would get together every now and then just to have fun at local shows in Memphis, or at gatherings at peoples' houses, coffee shops, etc. The two recorded an album on their home computer that started the ball rolling. "What we were doing was definitely not the norm at the time," says Kyle. "We were playing more folksy pop-country music that wasn't as popular back then. But we had a lot of fun playing it." Gary agrees. "We never even thought about starting an actual band together, which is ridiculous when you step back and think about it, considering we're brothers and we're both so interested in playing music. We had just always been in different bands." In January 2013, Kyle showed up to Local X studios in Memphis to showcase material from his band "Lights as Lenses" as part of a "Hometown Throwdown" promotion, which was a festival that Gary's band "Prosevere" put together. During an impromptu acoustic session, the Local X staff convinced Gary and Kyle to do a song together (you can view it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQA_QaMg7TA) that they had not played in years. That jumpstarted the desire to actually try and do a project together. The name "The Story and The Song" came about from the duo's goal: that every song has a story behind it. Kyle says "There has to be a story for people to connect. There has to some kind of point or meaning behind what you're saying in your lyrics. Every song that we write, we make sure that we're focusing on a certain subject and not just generalizing things to make words fit." The Story and The Song goes back to a more simple take on music. The focus is specifically on songwriting and melodies as opposed to production. "The melody and the guitar line determine the strength of a song, not all the added effects," says Gary. "We want this to be stripped down and as real as possible. My goal, in every band I've been in, has always been to write music that touches people's hearts and souls. To make people feel something when they listen. Kyle and I agree on that whole-heartedly." An acoustic americana folk-rock duo. Two brothers who keep it simple. We hope you love it with all your hearts. http://www.thestoryandthesong.com
