About this concert
“Shabaka Hutchings’ double drum-sax-tuba quartet isn’t your typical jazz group, anyone who’s seen them live especially will have experienced the band’s intensely sensual and exhilarating combo of rhythm and melody.” - Jazzwise Magazine  “Two years ago, Sons of Kemet were already blowing live audiences away and fascinating listeners on record – they do it even better now.” – The Guardian Sons of Kemet, a rambunctious double-drumming quartet led by saxophonist/clarinetist Shabaka Hutchings, will be taking the Sugar Club by storm this April 6th. Sons of Kemet erupted onto the scene in 2013 with their album Burn, securing rave reviews and scooping up a MOBO Award for Best Jazz Act. Their newest album Lest We Forget What We Came Here To Do, has been received with equal acclaim, securing a spot on Jim Carroll’s best albums of 2015 list, and the band are now ready to bring their hypnotic tunes on tour. Hutchings draws on a motley collection of influences, bringing links to early Caribbean and Rastafarian music, Afrobeat rhythms and funky New Orleans brass into play. He refers to the most recent album as “a mediation on the Caribbean diaspora in Britain”. This intriguing melting pot is fuelled by the voracious beats of the two drummers Tom Skinner and Seb Rochford and overlaid with Theon Cross’s versatile tuba playing, which lends both bass and melody to the tracks.  This is jazz, but perhaps not as you know it; it’s fresh, accessible and loaded with cultural capitol. The quartet creates eloquent sound-worlds; their music is imbued with cultural commentary, layered into the oppressive drumbeats and drawling saxophone. They can shift tone in an instant, carrying the audience with them into previously untraveled sonic worlds. Hutchings said, “We can let our musicality take on a life of its own. When we play live, we know what the end result is: everyone in hysteria. But how we get there is anyone’s guess.”  “grabs you by the scruff then shoves you, flailing, onto the dance floor.” - Evening Standard SUPPORT ACT:  Insufficient Funs are a throbbing drums and bass saxophone duo, from two of Ireland's most prolific jazz talents in Matthew Jacobson and Sam Comerford The rare use of bass saxophone provides deliciously low tones for Comerford to weave between grooving basslines and melodies, keeping intimate conversation with Jacobson's perky drumming. Its going to be a night of tasty beats and brass, with tuba, tenor and bass saxophone! Listen on SOUNDCLOUD here

Tom Skinner Biography

London based drummer, composer and producer Tom Skinner has been a vital and central figure in the burgeoning underground music scene in London throughout the last 20 years.

Tom is a leading member of The Smile with Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood. Their debut album A Light For Attracting Attention was released to critical acclaim in June 2022 and they are currently touring Europe with Worldwide dates to follow.

In 2012, Tom released his debut self-titled solo record under the alias Hello Skinny to critical acclaim, with MOJO Magazine describing it as “...existing in that fertile zone where jazz, dub, techno and avant-pop deliquesce into an exhilarating free-for-all.” The second Hello Skinny album Watermelon Sun, released on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood label in 2017, featured a collaboration with acclaimed veteran New York composer and trombonist Peter Zummo.

Tom is also an original member of award-winning band Sons Of Kemet alongside band-leader and frequent collaborator Shabaka Hutchings. Their third album Your Queen Is A Reptile [Impulse! 2018] garnered worldwide critical acclaim including a Mercury Prize 2018 nomination. Their latest album Black To The Future [Impulse! 2021] has been met with rave reviews, NME giving it 5 stars, claiming the album to be the band at their “most dynamic and urgent”.

In addition to his illustrious career in creating and performing music, Tom has curated his own bi-monthly live music night at The Pickle Factory in East London and hosts a monthly radio show on Worldwide FM.

Throughout his career, Tom has performed and recorded with notable musicians such as Grace Jones, Jarvis Cocker, Kano, Matthew Herbert, Mulatu Astatke, Floating Points, The Invisible, Zero 7 and many more.

His first eponymous release Voices Of Bishara is a chamber-jazz and post-dub fusing quintet suite, composed in part in homage to the late avant-garde cellist Abdul Wadud, that releases in November 2022 via the three-label partnership of Brownswood, International Anthem & Nonesuch Records.
