UQ Big Band

The UQ Big Band, formed in 2007, is comprised of students from an array of academic fields at the University of Queensland. Under the direction of award-winning trumpeter Clint Allen, the band performs at festivals, corporate functions, community events and concerts throughout Brisbane and has recorded two acclaimed albums. The Band’s repertoire ranges from swing favourites and big band classics by artists such as Michael Bublé to Natalie Cole, through to more contemporary composers such as Markus Geiselhart and Monika Roscher. In 2012 the UQ Big Band hosted its own performance titled Jazzimation that featured music from animation films including Gordon Goodwin’s three works for big band called Hunting Wabbits. In an Australian first, the UQ Big Band performed The other side of mozART, by Markus Geiselhart, in 2013. The piece involved jazz-infused reinterpretations of Mozart’s works such as The Magic Flute, The Marriage of Figaro, the Jupiter Symphony, Alla Turca and the Requiem Mass. Most recently, the Band showcased music from Radiohead, Bjork and German-based, singer/guitarist Monika Roscher’s Big Band as part of the G20 Cultural Celebrations in 2015.
