Invisible Landscapes Biography

Invisible Landscapes began as a group of close friends simply jamming together for sheer enjoyment. Frontman Raphael Lambriola introduced his preexisting musical ideas to bassist Hunter Gowen and keyboardist Jed Tuazon. They expanded on these ideas while they each improved musicianship. Along with this growth, their passion for music, and close friendships, flourished. In June of 2013, Invisible Landscapes organized into an official group with the addition of a talented drummer, Keith Perkins. He studied drumming in school and at the Governor's School for the Arts learning styles such as jazz, Latin, and funk. The knowledge and skill he brings to the band is unquestionable. Keith's entrance completed the band’s lineup—originally a quartet. However, Jed left the band at the end of 2015, prompting them to continue as a trio. His artistic perspective and the versatility of having keyboards is missed, yet the trio allows for a tighter and more focused sound. To describe the sound of Invisible Landscapes is a bit like describing a color. One can use as many descriptions as one can conjure, yet it never quite fully paints the picture (pun intended). The main reason for this is the broad range of styles that influence each member of the band. Raphael was most influenced by bands like Radiohead and Explosions in the Sky during the crucially formative years of his musical life. Yet, he also developed from the likes of Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, and other 60’s rock, along with classical music, and later, jazz (especially jazz guitarist Rick Whitehead). Hunter introduced the band members to many neo-psychedelic acts, e.g. Thee Oh Sees, Fuzz, Tame Impala, The Growlers, etc. which have shaped the band’s style substantially. Keith’s formal background in music along with his enthusiasm for bands such as And So I Watch You from Afar, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and Nine Inch Nails, contributes to his dynamic and intricate drumming which subsequently has a huge impact on the band’s overall style. Thus, while psychedelic rock is perhaps their overarching genre, some songs veer more toward certain aforementioned influences, while some songs veer toward others. The band does not claim to create a genre never before heard, but rather, to blend these many genres together in such a way that is uniquely Invisible Landscapes. An ambitious first year together led to the completion of a debut, five song EP and performances at Hampton Roads Virginia staples: The Norva and Jewish Mother as well as Richmond Virginia’s Camel and Cary Street Cafe. The band also traveled to West Virginia to perform at the sixth-annual grassroots festival, Pink Moon. A full-length interview was conducted in September 2014 for an episode of the podcast, "Stories in the Sky,” in which the band recapped their first year together. Additionally, they were up for nominations in four categories for the VEER Magazine 2015 Local Music Awards. In February 2016, they performed a full set at the lofty Sandler Center as part of WHRO’s Out of the Box Music Series. The thrill of these endeavors fueled the band's zeal, and their original songlist has ballooned since the release of their first EP. With a plethora of new (and refined) material, the band is currently recording their first full-length album. Time and experience have produced a deeper understanding of the sound they aim for and how to achieve it, and the band believes the next release will be a true representation of their artistic prowess. The fostering of creativity, skill, influences, and aspirations of Invisible Landscapes is synchronous with the music they craft. They hope to share their unique style to an ever-expanding audience. Currently, the band is partnered with Split Tape Records, an independent label based in Washington D.C. They are actively working on their first LP along with merchandise and festival performances. Stay tuned! "The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes."-Marcel Proust www.invisland.com
