About this concert
“Like Kate Tempest with a String Quartet”Joyce McMillan, The Scotsman Part gig, part performance, Greater Belfast is centred on the hopeful and divided city of Belfast. Little King and Cairn String Quartet blend song, storytelling, spoken word and instrumental music to examine a fractious relationship between a city and one of its sons. The ache of loving and hating a place, of examining and ignoring its history, provide grounds for a moving portrait where weird, old Belfast can be seen alongside the shiny veneer of the present. This is the patter and slang of Belfast, the caustic black humour of Belfast, all bent together to inspire stories and songs that cut through the sleech, and speak to the heart.

Cairn String Quartet Biography
The Cairn String Quartet is an experience like no other – four of the UK's elite string players coming together to create a unique and inspirational orchestral show with a twist. The quartet perform all genres of music on classical instruments – expect Bach to Bowie, Ravel to Radiohead, Mozart to Muse, Lady Gaga, Guns ‘n’ Roses and many more, excelling in sets originating from their Scottish roots. Pop and rock princesses at heart, the four ladies are passionate about music, write and arrange their own material and work with new artists across the musical spectrum. Their work can be heard on NBC’s show Smash, on adverts, including a recent L’Oreal advertisement played during the NFL Superbowl and on MTV. Famed for their collaborations, Cairn String Quartet and alter ego Electric String Orchestra has performed with artists throughout the UK, Europe and South America, including; appearances at Glastonbury, T in the Park, on BBC Radio 1, alongside Professor Green and Emeli Sandé at the MOBO Awards in 2011 and 2013. They toured and appeared on stage with The View for their 7 year unplugged tour last month, Echo and the Bunnymen during their recent Ocean Rain tour, and performed for the 10th anniversary of the Scottish Parliament, attended by HRH Queen Elizabeth II. This year the quartet was nominated for the Nordoff Robbins Big Apple Award and collaborations have included Miaoux Miaoux, Emma Pollock, RM Hubbert, Malcolm Middleton, Aidan Moffat and Bill Wells, There will be Fireworks, Call to Mind, James Graham (Twilight Sad) Jonnie Common, Dam Mantle, Maeve O Boyle, Lisa O Neill, James Yorkston, The Dewarists, Sarah Slean, Kid Canaveral, Prides, Fat Goth, Young Fathers and Will Hanson. Cairn String Quartet also opened the 2013 Edinburgh Film Festival. Last Christmas, the ladies hosted the BBC Radio Scotland Christmas Show with Vic Galloway and collaborated with Conquering Animal Sound, Hector Bizerk and Kid Canaveral. Fresh from a successful showcase at SxSW in Austin, Texas, the quartet looks forward to performing at Wickerman and Kelburn festivals and is also privileged to perform for every RBS Six Nations home game at Murrayfield. Cairn String Quartet has been the first band to play T in the park's new Site at Strathallen Castle, and the first band to play for the Athlete's Village for the Commonwealth Games. The busy bees will also open the Main Stage in Glasgow Green for the RSNO on 29th July 2014, with Rachel Sermanni as part of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
