Sirens Biography

There is a hardcore band with this name, one punk band, and one all girl pop band.

Hardcore Band:

(Taken from Let It Burn records, spelling cleaned up a bit)

Initiated by guitarist and songwriter Torsten (ex-BLEED INTO ONE, NO LESSON LEARNED), the band started as nothing more than an idea based on the wish to play his favorite music-style. He wrote a couple of songs, recorded demos and played them to his friends Daniel, Micha (7THSEALBROKEN, ex-NYARI) and Michael (TEAMKILLER). The idea soon became a project-band and the first collective band practice was scheduled. Everyone involved was amazed by the song-material and its outcome and the decision to make this project a serious band was made. SIRENS was born. One more band practice followed until the band entered Jörg's (Movies of the Future) YouAreGay-Studios to record their debut MCD “calling”.

Although “calling” is SIRENS’ first sign of life, the band’s maturity and tightness can easily compete with the scene’s old stagers. At the same time SIRENS represent a stirring youthful and energetic spirit. With influences reaching from late 80s and mid-90s “youth crew” Hardcore to modern bands like KILLING THE DREAM, WITH HONOR or REACH THE SKY, SIRENS manage to create their very own style. Straight forward hardcore music with an honest retro feel to it, a good portion of melody and challanging guitar work.

SIRENS is about to carve out a niche in the sub genre of traditional hardcore music. Their unique style combined with their experience as musicians and their long-lasting dedication to hardcore music and lifestyle, entitles them to be one of Europe’s most outstanding bands these days.

In order to put SIRENS in the position they belong, the band decided to team up with two of the most promising and hard-working European labels: POISON FREE RECORDS and LET IT BURN RECORDS. SIRENS’ debut EP “calling” will be released in December 2005.

Punk Band:

Sirens we're a punk band which went on to form the band Ringers. They released two 7" records through the 1234! Go! record label titled "Where Have You Been?" and "Long Distance Calling". The vocals were performed interchangeably on the recordings. Most of the songs were either sang by Justin (Drums) or by Ross (guitar) - both of whom went on to be the two songwriters of Ringers. Ross' vocal style was close to a D4 type of styling, in the tradition of bay area melodic hardcore, where as Justin counteracted this with his Ian Mackaye like delivery. Some other songs were sang by other members as well as the backing vocals, but information on the record of these tracks is hard to find.

Justin has also played with bands Speakeasy, City Limits, and the Insurgent.

Pop Group:

(Taken from Wikipedia.org)

The Sirens are a Newcastle-based girlband. The band consists of group founder Karina Brians, best friend Kat Haslam and Lea Cummings. The first formed in the last 90's with Karina, Kat and a third member, Michelle Heaton. Michelle was suggested to Karina and Kat and joined the band but when she auditioned for ITV reality show Popstars she left the group. In 2001, Kat and Karina met mutual friends Lynsey Schofield and Lea Cummings and hit it off from there. Lynsey and Lea joined the band and Sirens were formed. The four girls rehearsed almost every day and built their performing stance in nightclubs and bars all over Newcastle. They sold their cars and possessions to afford studio time and a short move to London to seek a publishing deal. It was at one of these performances where Kitchenware Records boss Keith Armstrong saw the girls perform and signed them up to his independant label in 2002.

Sirens began work on their debut album, set to be called 'Sure Shots'. The album consisted primarily of their own written and co-written material with producers/writers DC Joseph whom they hit it off with, as well as their own reworkings of a few classic tracks. The girls sound was something dear to them. It was to be a mix of their combined musical interests, an amalgamation of rock, hip-hop, pop, funk, soul, motown, nu metal, a style all of their own.

In 2003, after a year and a half working on the album, the girls released their debut single 'Things Are Gettin' Better'. The track was their own reworking of a song by Pharell William's band N*E*R*D and included re-written lyrics and samples. The song became a big club hit making the club charts numerous times around the release, backed by remixes by DJ Munro, DC Joseph and Maximus. The track also featured a video and was released as a CD single in August 2003.

Things Are Gettin' Better (CD Single) 1. Things Are Gettin' Better (Clean Radio Edit) 03.28 2. Things Are Gettin' Better (DC Joseph Original/Dirty) 04.30 3. Little Man (Album version) 4.00

The album 'Sure Shots' was due for release later that year (2003) but was delayed as the girls and their producers decided to polish up the album more. They took to rewriting certain tracks, changing the lyrics, the harmonies and re-recording new vocals and instrumentation for some of the songs. The tracks that were changed the most were 'Mad About You', 'How I Be', 'Control', 'Baby (Off The Wall)' and 'Little Man'.

'Sure Shots' original album tracklist. 1. Baby (off The Wall) 04.07 2. Control 04.05 3. Finger On The Trigger 03.30 4. Things are gettin' better 04.30 5. Come Correct 03.50 6. Little Man 04.00 7. Right Back Here In My Arms 03.40 8. Mad About You 5.15 9. The Sins 3.28 10. How I Be 3.40

Future plans were made and it soon emerged that the next single would be 'Baby (Off The Wall)'. Early promo CD's with the original album version were sent out in late 2003. These also included a bonus rock/metal version of the song titled 'Baby (Smash It Up)'. In early 2004 the track began to storm the club and r'n'b club charts and soon backed by remixes by Assquake, Fragile and Music Kidz began to grow even more popular. Up and coming music video director Ray Kay shot the video and everything was set. At this same time, Lea applied to feature on television show Poor Little Rich Girls, a programme where a poor girl and a rich girl would swap places and live each others lifestyle within each others budget and surroundings for a week.
