Headchanger Biography

Elder D rose from the dead in 1997 when he conceived and co-wrote The Elderly Rock Opera. The original Elderly Rock Opera was an amalgam of Long Beach bands Shave and The Len Brown Society. A space opened up for a cool gig at The Bong Leach Collective, a group of Long Beach artists and musicians creating a scene in the late 90's. JT’s band 40 Rod Pop had to cancel, so Elder D told the promoter The Elderly could fill in. At the time, The Elderly had yet to write a single song. We got the gig and wrote the entire rock opera over the course of two weeks in The Cake House Garage. The show was a surprise success but has been only performed a few times since. To convince the band to do it, Elder D had to initially agree there would be only one performance.

After playing in, recording and producing Shave since 1993, it became clear there were a number of songs by Elder D that did not fit into the Shave catalog (“It’s chicks, not politics / You fuckin’ dicks”). Around 2013 Elder D began recording the tracks to what would become the first Headchanger record - World Class Warfare, released November 2016.

World Class Warfare was recorded at the world famous Compound Studio in Long Beach (founded and built by Elder D, a long time ago). This record is a collection of ideas that could be described as protest songs or musical social commentary. It was engineered primarily by current owner of The Compound Too Twon, and performed by some of the very best musicians in Long Beach, and Elder D
Elder D’s early career was as lead guitarist and backup singer for Imagining Yellow Suns which were a Dr Dream Records artist in the late 1980’s. After the Suns broke up Elder D co-founded Long Beach Cake in 1991 with Suns drummer Robin and multi-talented Rebecca on violin / guitar / vocals. Long Beach Cake released one record “The Lungpigs” in 1995 on the Headchange Records label and Cake slowly dissolved from the scene in the late 90’s.

Headchanger started playing live gigs in 2015 with various lineups of the musicians featured on the recordings.
In 2020 shitz hella fuckin weird, so Elder D started Origin of a Song to release new ideas. The concept is to show the writing of a song from first inspiration to (hopefully) finished mastered release. Not every idea is worthy, maybe none of them are. It might cause some trouble, but Elder D don’t give no fucks. Some promo clips can be seen here, but the full versions are only on YouTube.
