Mr. Kind Biography

Oakland-based Mr. Kind has drawn comparisons to the literate lyricism of The National, the collaborative studio spirit of Dr. Dog and the dynamic energy of Arcade Fire. Since the release of their first EP, OK (July 2012), the band has moved from raw, americana influenced rock to the more dense, electronic leanings of their recently released second EP, Mr. Kind (November 2013). The confessional lyrical style approach introduced in OK is evident as well ("Maliced Hearts" and "The Best I Can Do (Is Love You"), with additional inquiry and observations about living in a distracting and demanding contemporary society ("Patience" and "Don't Be The last One In"). The collaborative effort between the members of Mr. Kind has developed throughout the course of the two EPs, reinforcing a DIY and hard-working ethos central to the band's philosophy. Originally formed to perform the solo material of lead songwriter Brian Bergeron, he found an ideal collaborator in guitarist/producer Jon Devoto (ex-The Matches). The two have co-produced the majority of Mr. Kind's material at Devoto's studio, Dirt Room. Their collaborative recording series Mr. Kind & …, frequently pairs Mr. Kind with other bands to put their stamp on influential songs by bands such as Blur, Spoon, and The Postal Service. The pair has also recently produced video game music for a local non-profit journalism organization and have even tried their hand at artisanal soap making (really).
